Background of the Study
Church sermons in Nigeria provide a rich tapestry for exploring pragmatic coherence in religious discourse. These sermons are not merely expository speeches but are carefully constructed texts that utilize pragmatic markers, discourse strategies, and culturally loaded expressions to unite congregations and convey moral teachings (Okoro, 2023). This study examines how pastors and religious leaders achieve pragmatic coherence—ensuring that their messages are logically and contextually consistent—across different denominations and regional traditions. Sermons often combine scriptural exegesis with contemporary language practices, incorporating elements such as code-switching, repetition, and strategic pauses to emphasize key points. The interplay of formal liturgical language with everyday idioms enriches the communicative effect, facilitating audience engagement and comprehension. By comparing sermons from diverse churches, the research investigates how religious discourse maintains coherence amid linguistic diversity and varying audience expectations (Afolabi, 2024). The study also considers how modern communication technologies and media presentations are influencing traditional preaching practices. Through discourse analysis and ethnographic interviews with religious practitioners, this research aims to map out the strategies that underpin effective religious communication, thereby contributing to both pragmatic theory and practical ministry.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the centrality of sermons in Nigerian religious life, there is limited systematic research on how pragmatic coherence is maintained in these discourses. Variability in language use—owing to regional, denominational, and stylistic differences—may lead to inconsistencies that affect message clarity and audience reception (Okoro, 2023). Additionally, as modern media influences traditional preaching, the mechanisms that once ensured coherence may be evolving, potentially diluting the intended impact. This study addresses the gap by examining the discourse strategies that foster pragmatic coherence in church sermons, thereby identifying challenges and opportunities for effective religious communication (Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To identify key pragmatic devices that contribute to coherence in church sermons.
To compare strategies across different religious traditions and regional settings.
To propose recommendations for enhancing communicative effectiveness in sermons.
Research Questions:
What pragmatic markers are most commonly used in Nigerian church sermons?
How do these markers contribute to maintaining coherence?
How do variations in preaching styles affect audience comprehension?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it elucidates the discourse strategies that ensure pragmatic coherence in Nigerian church sermons. The findings will benefit religious leaders, communication trainers, and scholars by offering insights into effective sermon construction and delivery. Enhancing the clarity and consistency of religious discourse can improve audience engagement and spiritual education, thereby strengthening community bonds (Chinwe, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing sermons from selected Nigerian churches and does not cover other religious discourses or media forms.
Definitions of Terms:
Pragmatic Coherence: The logical and contextual consistency of a discourse.
Church Sermons: Formal religious talks delivered during worship services.
Discourse Strategies: Techniques used to organize and present language effectively.
